Fitbakes: Sugar-free Bakery Gives Back To Cancer Research UK

Fitbake’s cakes have 90% less sugar, 80% less fat, 60% less calories and 500% more protein than leading high street brands. They have even been officially certified as diabetic friendly by international authority Sugarwise, making them the only bakery in the UK with this certification.

Firm favourites include the delicious Lemon Drizzle cake and a Hazelnut Spread (that I’m promised tastes exactly like Nutella, just without the sugar of course).

But that’s not all – Brazillian-born baker and founder of Fitbakes, Ella Rauen-Prestes, is using her business to make a positive impact within the community this month. Joining forces with Cancer Research UK to take part in their Sugar-Free February Campaign, Ella has promised to donate a portion of the money made from the sale of her sugar-free bakes to the charity. Proving that when we shop small, local and independent, it benefits us all #ShoppingSmallHelpsUsAll.

Speaking with Ella, I find out exactly what motivated her to get involved with additional charity work, including the work she does with her beloved therapy dog Piper:

What motivated you to start Fitbakes?

When I moved to Britain, I realised that this is “Cake Land”, it’s the only country in the world where there are entire aisles in supermarkets dedicated to cake. As a cake lover, I was in heaven! But when I tried to look for the healthy cake, there wasn’t any. Nobody made it, so I did!

When we started in 2017, it was just me baking at night whilst working a full-time job and running to the post office on my lunch breaks to post orders. We now have a team of 4 bakers, and ship over 300 packs of cake per day, as well as being stocked in Selfridges and Musclefoods.

Amazing! So, do you think that growing up in Brazil started your love of healthy baking?

Yes, so in Brazil people have been doing swaps to make food healthier for decades. I literally never saw a pot of sugar in my house growing up, instead my grandma always had organic stevia in the sugar pot, and agave in a tube. It’s cultural: you go anywhere in Rio and there are healthier treats available, so why not give Britain the same choice?

What additional work is your business doing to help within the community?

*We are giving our full support to Cancer Research UK and their Sugar Free February campaign, which aims to fundraise and promote the habit of eating without refined sugar. Such a great initiative, and so easy for all to get involved with – you can even eat cake!

To show our support, this month we’ll be donating a portion of our profits from the sale of sugar-free cakes to Cancer Research UK.

That sounds so worthwhile and I’m sure your fundraising efforts will be hugely appreciated. Is there anything else that your business does to give back on a more local level?

Yes, on the personal side, I have my PAT dog (Pets As Therapy), and we regularly visit nursing homes, schools for kids with learning disabilities and hospitals.

My dear Yorkie, Piper, has the wonderful talent of making people happy, and she absolutely loves her job. She is the star – I’m just I the backstage on this one.

What was it that prompted you to get involved with additional Charity work?

Giving back is so rewarding, and so much easier than people think. When we visit the nursing homes for example, it only takes up 1 hour of my week and the happy expressions we get when little Piper walks in are priceless.

In line with the campaign, could you please provide a comment on why you think supporting small businesses is so important? What do small businesses, such as Fitbakes, offer to the community that big businesses simply can’t?

I believe small businesses are able to recognise needs in the community that the big boys don’t always see. We’re closer.
